Much thanks to Joseph again for the backing vocals! I’m really happy with the way this one turned out. Again, this is still a rough mix. Whenever I’m done recording the cd, I guess that’ll be the final mix. Ha!
In “Gone”, I hear some Tom Petty/Neil Young/John Mellencamp influences.
In “It Might Work Out”, in the verses, I hear some piano chords similar to the likable guitar rhythm that Feist had in her “1,2,3,4″ song, and that’s mixed in with some Beatles-esque harmonies in the chorus. Probably your best vocals, John. Nice falsetto, Joseph. This might be the most radio-ready, imho. I’m no Simon Cowell, but I wouldn’t change the channel.
“Oh No” is a country-rock flavored, Beatlesque harmonized, Fiona Apple-ish “Criminal” piano melody with George Harrison-ish guitar solo. Can you tell I like it?
“Naked Souls” reminds me of a Little River Band/early Elton John kind of tune. The piano is simply gorgeous. I really love this.
“Don’t Even Try” has a remarkably catchy guitar rhythm. I would compare it to a song I have in my head, but I have no clue who the band is or how to find them to make the comparison. Bottomline: Don’t Even Try is a damn good song.
“Rocknrolla” is a fun bouncy Feist kind of rhythm combined with a Neil Young start onto Tom Petty then into crescendo-ing Eddie Money kinda vocals. Sounds so pure acoustically.
Amazing work, my friend.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words Freek! It’s always interesting to find out what comparisons my music draws. Footbawl is almost here!!!
I want to slightly change my review of it being radio-ready to movie-ready. I spoke to soon. I really could see that tune being played during a romantic-comedy montage. You ever saw those movies that show a bunch of different story-telling time-lapse clips that shows the guy and girl making progress in their relationship ,you know, he misses her while sitting alone at their favorite restaurant, she is bored at an all-girl’s party thinking about how much she misses him, he passes by her job and looks thru the window, and she’s not there, or she goes to the baseball park wearing his hat, but he’s not playing cuz he cancelled, etc..but then they meet up accidently at some event. Something like that.
It’s perfect for a movie montage, imo.
