Yesterday Was A Dog Day

aceIn so many ways, yesterday was a dog day. I saw a video of a German Sheppard that reminded me so much of Ace there on the left, I was just about brought to tears. Being at work was the only thing that saved me. I haven’t talked about Ace too much on here basically because it just hurt too damn much. It might seem silly to you if you aren’t a dog person, but if you are, you know of what I speak.

He was something way beyond a pet to me. He was my best friend. Hands down. I got him my last semester of college, and just about every significant moment of my adult life was marked by my friendship with him. So many memories, and they are all good.

So when I got home from work yesterday, Lou was especially excited. He bit me, not out of anger, just being playful. But he’s a big dog and he drew a little blood and left a nasty bruise. Like Ace, he doesn’t know his own strength. It’s one of the things I miss about Ace, and believe it or not, it made me smile. Because just like Ace, he knew he went beyond playful and he proceeded to lick the wound and wag his tale. And life went on.

So last night, I got a call from a friend that was unusually chatty. It ended up that his dog of 15 years had to be put down this week. I feel for him and hope I was the kind of friend he needed to talk to. Remember the good times, and it’s always puppy uppers and never dogie downers.
